Sinner Sara Douglass 9780732259396 Books

Though Sinner takes the focus away from Axis, Azhure, and the other seven Star Gods we've met in the first three books, the new characters don't disappoint in terms of depth and experience. Drago and Caelum, who seemed to be sketches of Cain and Abel, respectively, during the first books, now have a different sort of relationship now that they are all grown up. The only thing I found odd about Sinner upon first read was that the book skipped ahead 40 years from the end point of Starman. But later on, I understood why Douglass had chosen not to write about the 40 years of peace--she makes constant flashback references that sketch out the plot quite nicely anyway, and after all, conflict makes the (fictional) world go 'round. This book does take the series in a vastly different direction from what you might expect, but it's an intriguing change and a welcome surprise anyway. And for Faraday fans, her reappearance is also quite refreshing to the overarching plot. If you want to see how the idyllic realm of Tencendor can change (for better or worse), definitely pick this book up.

Sinner Sara Douglass 9780732259396 Books Reviews

This is my sixth or seventh reading of this series, and I have to say that it never seems to loose its appeal.
The original trilogy was amazing fantasy, while Sinner picks up after the "happily ever after"...something that I feel that more stories should do! Douglass was a fine author taken from us much too soon...
Sinner is the beginning of the second trilogy of the wayfarer redemption series. This takes place forty years after Starman ends and concerns mostly the children of Axis, Azhure and Faraday.

There's Azhure and Axis' eldest, Caelum, who sees everything in black and white and isn't a very good military commander or leader and who desperately hates his brother who tried to kill him when he was a baby.

Then there's Riverstar, a lust crazed bird woman who seems to have found a very dangerous lover.

And Zenith, the youngest of the brood who may or may not be Azhure's mother reborn for Wolfstar.

And Isfrael, Faraday and Axis's son who is somehow connected to the trees.

Drago the disinherited is the major player in this series. In Starman he attempted to kill of his older brother while still a baby, but didn't succeed. In retaliation his mother took away his magical blood leaving him an ordinary human in a family of almost immortal children. He has always been hated, though he doesn't even remember why. Yet in this book when he is found guilty by Caelum of his sister Riverstar's murder (which he didn't do) he runs with the magical rainbow scepter and his sister Zenith and ends up being followed by Faraday in her deer body. Eventually he goes through the star gate and manages to bring some truly evil beings back with him.

But while this is happening two human princes are struggling for control of the human population and the totally reasonable request that all the races of the land have to pay taxes, not just humans. So basically everybody's fighting and then really bad stuff happens.

This book is dark in a sad scary way-i didn't like it at the time and looking back I hate it. I don't think this author is capable of writing a happy scene or anything cheerful.

All in all, a promising star to the second trilogy of the wayfarer redemption. Better than anything in the first in fact. Darker too-much darker.

Four point five stars.

Three months later-in retrospect I don't think I like this series very much. It's not very well written, it has no likeable well drawn charecters and a lot of the actions are brutaly offensive. In retrospect I think I find Sara Douglass's writing to be very dark and depressing and gloomy-but not always in a way that works. I wouldn't advise reading her stuff, excepting Threshold, unless you can work a two week depresion into your life.

It's OK, better if you read the whole series with it.
I'm 3 quarters done with the book. This book really is a deviation from the original Wayfarer trilogy. She throws mud on all her characters and leaves you not knowing who to root for. For the first half of the book I was rooting for the 'bad' guys. She takes Axis and Ashure of the first trilogy and turns them into trite, half brain dead incompetents (The little they show up in the book). I'm hoping as I go into the 2nd and 3rd book she somehow redeems someone. She seems to have taken a very dark turn when she wrote the 'Hades Daughter' and hasn't come back.
Love this series! I'm glad it's getting back on track for me but don't love them as much as the first book!

The Wayfarer redemption series is one of the most imaginatively and masterfully written epic fantasy series I have ever tied into in my life. This series brings the characters to life and takes you there in a way that few writers ever manage to do. Excellent and two thumbs up!
