Martin Shapiro’s 2039
President’s Day, February 21, 2039
Life in the United States is much different than we remember it. No nuclear explosions, widespread epidemics, or other catastrophes have devastated the countryside. But the America we grew up in and the land that we loved is gone. The freedoms that the Republic was founded upon have been trampled, shackling the individual “for a more equal greater good” and for the “security of the nation,” so says the government.
• Retirement age is seventy-five.
• Healthcare is rationed.
• The NSA, FBI and the IRS monitor everyone,
our communications, movements and finances.
• More than marijuana is legal.
• There is no escape.
• Exit Permits are required to leave the country,
…even for a cruise or vacation in the Caribbean.
• And that’s… just the beginning!
The sum of a country’s wealth is its ENERGY. America is energy independent and has prohibited export. We don’t share. The rest of the world is scrambling. Alliances have shifted. Relations with Israel are severed after their bombing of Iran. Our military protection is for sale. We’re the modern Hessians. The budget is balanced and the surplus nearly a trillion. Our total debt peaked but was reduced by a bail-in of our own. There’s full employment and the population is growing.
But not everyone’s happy!
Jonathon and Ida Kadish have had enough. Diagnosed with a health issue for which the National HealthCare Plan offers no treatment, Jon and his wife decide to get out, to seek treatment elsewhere. A retired Navy Commander and former skipper of submarines, Jon is a vice president in the Defense Industry Cabinet with a high-level security clearance. His travel is restricted. But they have a married daughter with children, living in Canada. They manage a Family Assistance Exit Permit to visit them in Sherbrooke, Quebec.
And they don’t plan to return!
It’s President’s Day weekend. Jon and Ida embark on a tension filled drive to the Canadian border, but it’s not as easy as they had hoped. Once again Martin Shapiro tells of a journey; of mysterious people they meet, of bureaucratic obstacles, new opportunities and intrigue – that envelop them from startling places and how they manage to weigh through their hopes, plans and options in just the next few days...

In 2014, the United States is perhaps at a crossroads. Extreme partisanship has created what amounts to gridlock in Washington, DC, and the fallout of paranoia from 9/11 continues to threaten our personal liberties. What, you might ask, will the country look like in another quarter century? In 2039, industrialist turned author Martin Shapiro extrapolates the future based on what is happening now.The story of Jonathan and Ida Kadish, well-to-do Jewish citizens of a United States that has become what amounts to a police state, where personal liberty is a thing of the past, and every aspect of a citizen’s life is controlled by an impersonal, uncaring state bureaucracy. Shapiro paints a dismal picture of a possible future in a gripping story of one family’s desire to live life on their own terms. One doesn’t have to agree with Shapiro to enjoy this story, which is replete with details – many eerily similar to, or projections of, current trends.
A compelling tale of what could happen if you fall into the category of the type of person who ‘wonders what’s happening.’

Martin Shapiro 2039 edition by Martin Shapiro Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This was a well written, fast moving read. I ENJOYED IT VERY MUCH . It ended in a way that suggests the story could continue on. It gave us glimpses into the author's version of our not too distant future.
Intriguing,thought-provoking, and frighteningly realistic. This book definitely makes you wonder if America is headed in the direction the story describes. The scary thing is that it entirely possible...but hopefully not prophetic.
Engaging but very disturbing about what the future holds for all of us. Unsettling, as it is no longer clear who are the "the good guys". Thought provoking about the necessary birth rate for existence. Is this also applicable to organizations, etc? Skillful character development whom you will absolutely connect to and love.
This story takes place in 2039. The condition of the county and society at that time is entirely plausible and not sheer fantasy as Orwells famous novel.
Mr.Shapiro has a strong business background and he is a keen observer of trends we see developing in society. You will say "He is right-I never thought of that" The story
Is realistic and frightening.
A must read if you want to join the discussion at Starbucks!
Mr. Shapiro,
I just finished your book 2039 and absolutely loved, loved, loved it. The 3 kinds of people, is going to give me some power in my Soroptimist club. We get the "we've never done that before" or "done it that way". The 18 notes on what is happening today in our world is so true. I could see the world being just the way you described it and it gave me a chill. There are many more events that are changing our world as we know it, that is just a little scary.
I am glad that I am in my 70's. I can look, read, and hear what is happening to our America and it is not encouraging to me or I think to our young people.
Thanks again for a great read.

I found the narrators, Ida and Jon Kadish, secondary to the power of the political and social issues that the author takes on. In 2039, the federal government has expanded to control banking and the military for profit, drugs are legalized for revenue and cost savings. There's a single payer health care plan, restrictions on people's rights and ½ of Alaska sold to Canada to help reduce the government debt. There is also a discussion on the use of rare earth minerals, thorium and particularly graphene, the miracle new form of carbon invades the future - stronger than steel and thinner than a sheet of paper and more conductive than copper.
All of the above arise in bits and pieces as Jon and Ida try to defect. On their journey, new decisions and directions open up as they deal with intrigue, mystery and even... murder!
What starts out as a possible scenario of a future America, with government controls and surveillance invading all aspects of life, quickly morphs into an international spy "thriller" with a complete change of focus of the main characters. That was a little disappointing, as the rebellion of Jon and Ida is quickly terminated and they become part of the scene they initially tried to escape from. Nevertheless, it is well written, with a few typos, and is an interesting read if you like political intrigue.
