Vacation Jeremy C Shipp Books

This was my first foray into the works of Jeremy C. Shipp and I came away impressed and not wanting to go on this type of vacation anytime soon. The story centers on a normal guy who has yet to go on his "Vacation" which is a cultural passage of sorts, however our friend soon finds himself in a weird back and forth battle between two societies. Well written and recommend for fans of Bizarro and weird fiction novels alike.

Vacation Jeremy C Shipp Books Reviews

Jeremy Shipp takes the reader on a psychological head-trip through
the eyes of Bernard Johnson. A thirty-five year old intelligent
man with a wild, incredible imagination. Bernard is tormented
with his dreams, fantasies, and nightmares. The reader is taken
through the door of a magic carpet ride of adventure, but the ride
doesn't end there. The ride continues from the magic carpet of fantasy,
through the doors of the haunted house of fear. Each reader will be
taken through the same journey, but if they dare go a second round,
they may experience a completely different feeling than the first
ride. Vacation is a thought-provoking, surrealistic first time novel,
created into a dark fiction masterpiece. This adventure story through
the mind of Johnson is disturbing, provocative, and challenging.
Shipp covers every segment of human emotion to perfection, leaving
the curious reader in total darkness. Reading Vacation is like
watching one of Alfred Hitchcock's brain-teasing movies, where the
reader is left confused. This unpredicting story of one man's
journey is a powerful, bizzare, roller coaster ride into the human
psyche. Vacation demands the reader to begin this journey once again,
and for each reader that takes a second ride, Shipp's mission is
accomplished. His sole intention is to make sure the reader hasn't
missed anything. The reader is left with questions, not answers,
and is forced to solve this puzzle of mystery. Is Bernard Johnson
battling with depression? Does depression take over? The author
draws a fine line between fantasy and reality through the wandering
mind of Bernard Johnson, as he struggles out of his comfort zone.
I recommend this novel to all readers who enjoy dark fiction,
combined with challenge, and suspense. However, one must be as daring
as Jodi Foster was in "Silence Of The Lambs." Bear in mind that she
was warned, "Don't let Hannibal get into your head!" May I remind you
that he was a clever psychiatrist, and she was forced to take that
daring risk. Shipp invites his readers to take that risk, while riding
that roller coaster of madness through the psychological journey of
Vacation, reminding readers that the greatest risk in life is not
taking one.

...the restless dreams of youth."

To be fair to author Jeremy Shipp, I'd classify myself to a novice in the world of "bizarre fiction" and publisher "Raw Dog Screaming Press" that carries the water for the genre. On the other hand, I'm no stranger to the quirky or obscure or offbeat, and appreciate alternative styles or themes - assuming they are well crafted and ultimately purposeful.

I found that "Vacation", while unusual and certainly bizarre, was in the end simply a contemporary twist on a tired theme that life is unfair. Shipp's musing, through teacher-protagonist Bernard Johnson, reflects the angst of a troubled generation, frustrated to learn that power is wielded by the wealthy, industrialized nations - Shipp's "TICs" - at the expense of the less fortunate "Meeks." OK, got that, been there, but I'll concede that there is always room for a clever twist on perceived injustice, a refreshing path the ends in a different destination. So while Shipp's approach - the mandatory, year-long Vacation shows promise, the payoff gets lost in hasty glossing over of what should have been the author's manifesto. Sure, the literary shorthand could be rationalized as Shipp merely playing the role of the agent, provoking thought, allowing the reader to draw their own conclusions. But it could also simply be a case of lazy journalism - that, for example, further inspection of those "ten books that schools won't allow you to read" may have required more energy that the author was willing to expend - or more time than the publisher would tolerate. I'd lean to the latter, but any event, it left me with a rushed, unfinished impression - a book disconnected beyond the intentional incongruities that distinguish this class of fiction.

So this isn't "Naked Lunch" and Jeremy Shipp isn't William S. Burroughs, but fans of this original drug-induced, hallucinogenic standard bearer will probably enjoy Bernard Johnson's observations of victims and victimization.
I loved this story. It was entertaining, and there's plenty of substance to ponder when the book isn't in your hand. Jeremy Shipp has a storytelling style all his own. It's a fun, well-crafted book that I recommend highly.
I ordered this book randomly after chatting with the author on goodreads and finding him to be an interesting guy... It turned out to be a very fun read that hit me at exactly the right moment.. A concisely scripted metaphor for the problems of our time, carried with a humorous voice, and a plot that's both entertaining and thought provoking. A totally unique work, for sure, fairly hard to describe without giving away spoilers
Not because of this outstanding book, I just wanted to brag.

Jeremy Shipp's greatest work yet. It's more subtle in it's bizzarity than Cursed and longer than a piece of string. Vacation is a book that makes you suddenly stop reading, back up a few lines and read it again as your brain catches up with what just happened and goes WTF?

Vacation should be required reading in schools were education is more important than indoctrination, and used for indoctrination purposes in all other institutions.
