Serengeti Shall Not Die Bernhard Grzimek Michael Grzimek Alan Moorehead 9780345236203 Books Reviews

Dr. Bernard Grzmek wrote "Serengeti Shall Not Die" after he and his son Michael counted all the animals in Ngorongoro Crater, a giant caldera (sunken volcano) that is approximately 3,205 square miles and a mile deep from the rim of the crater. Ngorongoro means "big hole" or "place where it sank" in Swahili or some other African language. It should mean Garden of Eden because it is the most beautiful place in east Africa. From the rim of the crater you can see Magadi Lake, which seems to be pink. When you get down there it turns out to be a bazillion flamingos feeding on tiny little shrimp. The vegetation was lush and verdant. Wildlife abounds and it is spectacular! We saw lions, rhinos, elephants, hippos, zebras, hyenas, wildebeest -- everything you would expect to see in a healthy ecosystem.

The Grzimeks counted the animals in the crater in 1959 to prepare for counting all the animals in the surrounding Serengeti (in case you were wondering why a book titled Serengeti is actually about Ngorongoro.). They flew a small zebra-striped plane back and forth over the crater and became experts at estimating the size of various herds.

SPOILER ALERT Before the Grzimeks could count the number of animals on the Serengeti 25-year-old Michael was killed when the little zebra plane hit a large bird in mid-air. Needless to say, this was the greatest tragedy Berhard ever suffered.

Dr. Grzimek was the director of the Frankfurt zoo for 29 years until he retired in 1979. When we met him at the zoo in 1973 he told us that he has expanded the boundaries of the zoo greatly by claiming that it been much bigger before it was thoroughly bombed in World War II. One hippo saved herself by hiding out in her pool during the bombing raids.

Dr. Grzimek went on to greater fame when he wrote his 13 volumes of "Animal Life Encyclopedia" in 1968 (published in English in 1975). He went on to lesser infamy when he married his son Michael's widow and then adopted his grandsons.

You must read the book if you are planning to go to Ngorongoro, the Serengeti, or any part of Tanzania. It's a great book even if you aren't planning to go.
Very happy.
This book is a classic painting ofthe Serengeti and life on the Masai Mara as well. For anyone who has been on safari and wants to embrace what we must all work to save this book has eternal value!
I finally received the book, it took several weeks and a couple of emails to get results. I get the feeling the vendor is not too organized but eager to please nevertheless. Oh well we all slip once in a while.
The book is a neat old used version of one of my all time favorite books and I look forward to reading it again.
A very interesting book about pioneers in animal conservation.
Excellent book and remains timely.
Read this 50 years ago and became intrigued by East Africa. Re-read it this year and am now determined to go. Thank you, Grzimeks, for documenting what was — and for starting the conversation, long before it was popular, about the rights of animals and the need for us all to live together.
If you like the stories of the Serengeti and particularly the migration this is an excellent book about someone who had a great passion for the conservation work there.
