I am giving this 4 stars because I should not love this series this much. They are kind of like a car accident, you can not help but stare even though you feel as though you should not. Sophie Kinsella has a style about her writing that is highly engaging and entertaining which leaves me looking forward to the next book. I am writing my review on Ties the Knot because I think this is my favorite so far. I read the first one after picking it up on the break room table at work. I enjoyed it way more than I expected so got the next two (Takes Manhattan and Ties the Knot). I am currently reading Shopaholic & Sister and she is is completely out of control in this one. As I read in another review, I feel like yelling at the book “Don’t be such an idiot!”, but this idiotic, loveable character with zero self control is just irresistible. I know not everyone would like these, but it is worth trying one. So, never mind.

Shopaholic Ties the Knot Sophie Kinsella 9780440241898 Books Reviews

This was a book I had to replace, my dogs ate the back off my library book....they are 12 and 13 years old, not puppies! But, reading the book already, it was quite funny, reminds me a bit of Lucille Ball, jumping from the frying pan into the fire. I have read several other of her books and recommend them to someone who already has way too many problems in their life and would love to relax with something they can laugh about and all things come out well in the end
Okay, I admit I love Becky. She's an unrepentant uber-consumer, who seldom met a shop (not to mention a sale) she didn't want to dlve into. She only feels regret when she figures her husband is going to find out how much she spends on Prada. She's loving and generous, she just has a serious clothes jones--which she can well afford by this point. So nice to have someone who is not ashamed of herself for being a first world consumer. I know, I know, there are many serious issues out there, but sometimes we do need to be reminded roses still exist, even if we choose not to smell them. BTW, I work in a helping profession--I see enough misery at work, when I read, I like a little levity.
It's not that I expected much really. I did read the first two books - more out of curiosity than anything else - and I must say, contrary to what I thought, I quite liked them. I would't say they were the best I've read, but good enough to read something between things.
This book however, was just plain boring. I guess I got tired of Becky Bloomwood. In fact, I don't really like her. I didn't mind before but somehow, in this book, she really stared to annoy me. I must admit that I did wonder at some point how she was going to pull the wedding thing off, but other than that I found myself skipping pages because I just couldn't be bothered. Which is something I seldom do.

I was hoping that this book would surprise me as well, but, all in all not that great for me.
I guess I'll not read the next books -)
So, I'm totally in love with the Shopaholic series, but this book was the one I had the most difficulty relating to. I'm still giving it five stars because I think it was really well-done, but the conflict in this one was difficult for me to deal with--almost TOO scary! I'd like to say that nothing like that would ever happen to me, just like I'd like to say that I'd never get into debt and throw away my bills without reading them, but...it's like reading about all my worst fears! I don't want to say any more and spoil the plot, so you, dear reader, will have to read it yourself to find out just what was so nail-biting.

Which is one of the achievements of this series. It seems so lighthearted and glittery, and it is, but it uses its surface glitter to tap into deep-seated fears and problems. How do you deal with the fact that you have recurring patterns of behavior that you can't seem to control and that repeatedly cause problems for you and the people you love? How do you deal with the conflicting demands of your family, your in-laws, and your own desires? How do you stop things that you've innocently set into motion out of a desire not to make things bad, but that are now threatening to blow up in your face? Becky Bloomwood is peculiarly like a figure out of classical or Shakespearean tragedy (snobs, stop your howls of outrage!), caught up in the inevitability of her fate and her character, it's just that her problems come wrapped up in Vera Wang wedding dresses. Technically there's so much to love here, despite a certain repetition that keeps repeating itself (haha!) as the series goes on, and scholars of literary technique would do well to study the apparent lighthearted effortless that Kinsella imbues her plot with, even as she draws subtly on tricks from detective and horror fiction in order to keep the tension ramped up to high.
