I think I’ve finally figured out the difference between this and the Mercy series. Anna is so very opaque even to herself about her wants and needs while Mercy is really clear. For some reason Charles tells you why Anna wants something, rather than Anna herself. It’s an interesting narrative dynamic and I’m torn on whether I like it as a matter of principle. I do know that this story was a joy to read and the story was a satisfying set of sub-arcs that worked really well. There was some foreshadowing for the driving plot need in the previous books but to be honest the best notes about this came from Mercy. I would recommend this book for anyone who has read the previous ones in this series.

Dead Heat An Alpha and Omega Novel Patricia Briggs 9780425256756 Books Reviews

I love Patty Briggs. With that said, I was a bit disappointed with the latest in the Alpha & Omega series. One sentence will do it, - Too much horse. Patty loves horses. I'm glad she chose to share that with us, but her editor should have seen that she was sharing just a little too much of that love. I feel it took over the story, and in between being with horses in some capacity, the reader got to visit with Charles and Anna briefly before being whisked away again to ..... more horse stuff. There was a whole dimension added to Charles' past that just didn't seem believable. Charles is always strong, a mystery, deep........and the tidbit that was dumped on the reader from out of nowhere (about a past love) had no depth, no complexity, almost no thought at all. It was so out of character for me that it made me question if the series can remain alive enough to keep me interested. This book lost my interest less than halfway through.
I love the Alpha and Omega series and it's originating series, Mercy Thompson. Both are five star plus series that are reread worthy. And Dead Heat is a great addition to A & O, quickly becoming one of my favorites.
Charles Cornick is the two hundred year old son of and enforcer for Bran, the Marrok, or leader of the North American wolf shifter packs. Charles is a dominant, is very private and doesn't form attachments, until he meets the newly turned Anna. They have been mated for three years and Anna continues to come into her own and her Omega powers as she approaches her 26th birthday. Anna wants to start a family with Charles, but he refuses to consider it because of his role in his father's pack. He is trying to decide on a present for her when he gets a call from an old friend who owns an Arabian horse ranch in Arizona asking him to visit. Charles decides to kill two birds-to visit with Joseph Sani and buy Anna a horse from him for her birthday. But their mini vacation takes a dark turn when a powerful fae attacks Joseph's family, possibly heralding a war to come between humans and fae, with wolves no longer able to maintain neutral ground. Anna and Charles will have to work closely with each other and federal agents to ferret out the dark fae, known in the fae community as the doll collector. This book can standalone, but if you haven't read previous books in the series you will want to after reading this book.
This is an Alpha and Omega book, set in the same world as Mercy Thompson’s stories, though she herself doesn’t show up in this one aside from a couple of mentions that she’s one of the few people Charles Cornick (the Alpha werewolf) feels personally close to. Another person in that small group is Joseph Sani, a Navajo whose father is an alpha werewolf in Arizona but whose mother is human, and so is he. He’s also dying of cancer when Charles touches base with him for the first time since he and Anna Latham (an Omega werewolf) were married; when Charles learns this he and Anna fly down to Arizona (Phoenix area, though not in the city) to visit him and his family. The Sani family are horse breeders and trainers, and Joseph was the best of them until his health broke. But very shortly after they arrive there’s a crisis with Joseph’s son’s wife, who was put under a compulsion by a renegade fae, though she managed to stave off the compulsion to kill her three children by repeatedly stabbing herself with the knife she was supposed to kill them with. She’s dying when Anna volunteers to turn her into a werewolf, which will both break the compul-sion and let her body heal quickly from the wounds. And so the story goes, with a hunt for the fae going in parallel with a major horse show that the Sani family are competing in (including the kids whom the mother was supposed to kill). I like this series.
I've now read four of Ms. Briggs' books in about a week, and of the MANY things that keep me coming back to her, one huge one is that neither of the main characters is blond or blue-eyed!!! I can't tell you how much I dislike the ubiquitousness of that look in the hero/heroine in fantasy. Being of the same coloring myself, I can say it's not bigotry that prompts my impatience with the paradigm, but rather that I have an appreciation for the variety of people in the US, and Britain as well. Why don't the works of more authors reflect the rich traditions of Native American mythology? Or African? Or the many Asian cultures we are second home to?

Anyway, off the soapbox.... Ms.Briggs is not only a talented storyteller, she obviously does plenty of research into localities in which her stories take place. She is also very articulate and has a keen grasp of the damage an abusive relationship can do, as well as the time and effort that goes into healing from one.

The evolution of the main character, Anna, from a deeply damaged and terrified young woman into a calm, courageous and forceful mate is a good one, and one I intend to continue to follow as long as there are books about her to read!
I would recommend this book for anyone who has read the previous ones in this series.
