A short, sweet gay romance, about summers of love and loss, from the author of "His Unforgivable Soup"...
Jeremy Cole is a success, by anyone's standards he runs a popular online magazine, and two of his books have hit the best-seller lists. Though he's quiet and a little clumsy, his family and friends adore him. But throughout his life, he's known there was something missing - the person who would make him complete. Someone he met years ago, during a summer he spent at the lake with his grandparents. Someone who sent him postcards and dozens of little gifts, someone who led him on great adventures... and then disappeared from his life, only to return a decade later. Someone who comes and goes on a whim, chasing a goal Jeremy can't begin to understand.
After his grandmother's death, Jeremy is faced with selling his family's treasured summer home - and with deciding, once and for all, what to do about Charlie, the only man he's ever loved.

If Not for Charlie edition by Carol Davis Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Sweet story. Unfortunately, jumping back and forth in time is not a favorite for me.
This little romance with an almost dream like undertone does not need more to tell its story. Jeremy and Charlie does not need more words to tell their tale stretching almost 18 years since they met when they were just 9 years old kids. I really enjoy the writing.
I loved this short story! It is exactly as promised a short, sweet gay romance. Jeremy and Charlie meet as nine year olds on the summer vacations at the lake. What follows is a beautiful story of the next eighteen or so years of their lives but told mostly through Jeremy' eyes.
For a short story this did well in telling the most important details of the 2 MCs' background, how and when they met, and how much they came to mean to each other. I didn't fully understand why Charlie's parents kept him away until he reveals it at the very end (though I'm not sure why it wasn't addressed in so long when it was the biggest elephant in the room). Now unlike the description, there is no indication of Jeremy being a great success, as there is no mention of his books and magazine until nearly the very end. There is no mention of him being quiet and clumsy, or that he has family and friends that adore him. In fact, if it weren't for the description, I wouldn't have even known these things about him. It doesn't necessarily take away from the story, just disappoints when the description highlights things about an MC that makes them appealing but then never addresses those things in the actual book.
As for Charlie, though it is nice to have an HEA ending, an HEA here was not believable for me. Even after they got together and had been together for a while, Charlie was still immature and flighty. He still had a list of "1000 interesting things" that he created as a kid that he'd wanted to do, and that was what he dedicated a great deal of his life to. Constantly packing up and gallivanting off somewhere. Where did he work to support all of this travel anyway? And he said that was scared of his life and his feelings. Does that sound like someone ready for marriage? Especially when out of those "1000 interesting things", proposing to Jeremy was the absolute last thing on that list? What if Jeremy had gotten into a fatal accident before all this? Or what he'd just gotten fed up 2 years prior and left Charlie then? Would he have bumped up the proposal to keep him from leaving? Also, Charlie wanted Jeremy to help him write a book because he struggled with speaking English sometimes. What exactly does that mean? Does he have a speech impediment, a disability/impairment, or just poor grammar? That's a big thing to drop about an MC on the 2nd to last page.
Two things to keep in mind there is absolutely no intimacy whatsoever, and the entire story is told only from Jeremy's POV. I mention that for readers who find those things a problem. But all in all it was a sweet little story for the most part.
I read this story because I love Carol Davis as an author. It was a fun, well paced read which happened to be about a gay couple. Carol writes extremely well and I would recommended this to anyone looking for a quick evening read.
This is short, but so worth the read! Brilliantly written to bring you along with the character from tired edging despair back to hope and joy and security.
Two young boys meet on summer break each year. Then one year it just stops. find out how and why. this is a great little read. NOT sexy. We'll written and emotionally charged. HEA stand alone.
I like the book from start to finish but it was a little to short. I hope that you will make a book two so that we can see if charlie got to write his book. And stay in one place please make a book two
